Darien 8 White Rallies to Beat NC

If the game Darien's Senior eighth-grade White team and the New Canaan Red team played Saturday is repeated on high school level in four years, it will be a Thanksgiving Day classic. Darien scored two late touchdowns to stun New Canaan, 21-14, at Darien High School.

Jack Feeley scored on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Drippe with 13.5 seconds left for the winning touchdown. Drippe passed to Daniel Traver for the conversion. John Sommi's interception on New Canaan's final drive sealed the victory.

Darien (3-0) tied the game at 14-14 on Traver's 1-yard run with 1:23 left. The touchdown was set up by a punt return by Traver that gave Darien the ball on the New Canaan 28. Connor Cochran ran 20 yards to set up Darien at the 5-yard line, and Traver scored on a fourth down run. The conversion failed.

New Canaan (2-1) took possession and moved inside Darien territory. Ryan Murrary's interception gave Darien the ball back with 49.7 left. Starting on its own 28, Darien completed two passes before the big play for the final touchdown.

"That's the way we drew it up,'' Darien coach Mitch Ross said. "Of course, the way it's drawn up on the chalkboard doesn't always go like that. We tried to suck them inside with short stuff and then tried to hit Feeley."

Darien took an 8-0 lead in the second quarter on Drippe's 1-yard run. New Canaan scored in the second quarter and took the lead with a touchdown and conversion in the third.

Darien lost to New Canaan during the regular season last year, then defeated the team in the playoffs. "It's always a close game between these two teams,'' Ross said.
