Both of Darien Highs varsity lacrosse teams have had outstanding seasons. Now, with the postseason starting, both are sitting in prime position. Literally. The Blue Waves girls and boys both earned No. 1 seeds in their respective FCIAC tournaments, giving them extra home games as they march toward the state tournaments.
The boys team finished the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record in conference play, giving them the edge over undefeated No. 2 Staples. Although Staples 5-0 out-of-conference record edged the Blue Waves mark of 2-2, Dariens losses came against tough out-of-state opponents Conestoga (Penn.) and Manhasset (N.Y.) leaving them perfect in Connecticut. The Blue Wave also outscored its opponents 213-60.
Winning this years FCIAC tournament would give Darien 10 of the last 14 conference championships. Theyll start the tournament Saturday at home versus Trumbull.
The girls were every bit as impressive as the boys. At 12-0 in conference play, they were the only girls team to go undefeated in the FCIAC. With a 13-3 overall record, like the boys their only blemishes were against tough non-state competition: Garden City, Farmingdale and Suffern, all from New York state.
After a first-round bye, the girls Blue Wave will start the FCIAC tourney Monday evening. Theyll host the winner of the quarterfinal match between Fairfield Ludlowe and Wilton.
