Darien Named 10th Richest School District in U.S.

DARIEN, Conn. – With a median household income of $175,766, Darien is the 10th richest school district in the country, according to the website 24/7 Wall St.

According to the ranking, 52.5 percent of Darien households earn more than $200,000 a year. The percentage of households earning less than $10,000 is 1.4.

Darien schools spend $18,047 per student, around $7,000 more than the national average. About 86 percent of school funds come from property taxes, with the average homeowner spending around $15,000 in property taxes every year.

The funding is apparently being put to good use. A recent ranking in Newsweek placed Darien High School as the sixth best in the state, while U.S. News and World Report placed it seventh. Darien High School has a graduation rate of 95 percent, and its average AP test score of 4.3 is the highest in Connecticut.
