DARIEN, Conn. - Its not called Contentment Island for nothing. It is the most expensive parcel ever offered for sale in Darien, and if youre willing or able to part with $26 million, then Contentment Island might be the address for you.
The property, situated in the Tokeneke section of Darien and directly on Long Island Sound, features an 8,800-square-foot Georgian-style home, as well as a barn, office and gym, guesthouse, pool and deepwater docks.
What else, you might wonder, does $26 million buy? For starters, two parcels of land (6 Shennamere and 27 Contentment) for the price of one.
According to listing agent Pam Spellane, of Halstead Property of Darien, the waterfront estate setting is dazzling. The property extends from the east end of Contentment Island to Scotts Cove to the west. There are, said Spellane, more than 5 beautiful, secluded and professionally landscaped acres, all of which are hidden by a tall wall and gates at both entrances.
The main house was completed in 2004 and is built on a 56-degree radius, which means it is designed in a subtle, circle-like sweep. Its architectural intent mirrors Greywalls, a classic home design by Edwin Lutyens in Muirfield, Scotland.
Everything is unique, said Spellane, From the hand-waxed Irish pine walls in the library and custom millwork throughout to the wine cellar featuring a domed ceiling reminiscent of the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station.
Of course there are more (and more) eye-popping details. The house features a master suite with his and her bathrooms and four additional en-suite bedrooms three of which have bronze Juliet (as in Romeo and) balconies that take advantage of Sound breezes. Its spacious living room has a wall of windows overlooking the rolling lawn with a view of the water.
Additionally, the property has a recreational barn with post and beam design, a separate office building, a recently updated 1,500-square-foot guesthouse with views of Scotts Cove, as well as several storage outbuildings and room for six cars in the garage.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own something truly unique," said Spellane. It's like being on vacation all year long.
But with a property that boasts such breezy contentment, who would ever need a vacation?
