Police were called to the cemetery on Tuesday, May 23 on a report of illegal dumping. The cemetery manager told police that sometime during the preceding week, an unknown person had dumped a large amount of raw sewage int he back of the cemetery by the river bak that runs along the west side of the property. The cemetery is located at 25 Camp Ave., right on the border with Stamford, and the river in question is the Noroton River.
The cemetery manager said that last Saturday he was informed by a patron that there was a strong, foul odor come from the back of the mausoleum by the river. The manager inspected the location and discovered the sewage material dumped on the river bank in the back of the mausoleum.
Darien officers saw what appeared to be truck tire marks near the area of the spillage, which were approximately 15 feet from the sewage. This suggests that a septic tanker had parked there and used a hose to disburse the sewage, according to police.
The Noroton Heights Fire Department responded to the scene and placed the hazmat boon by the river bank to contain the waste from further polluting the water. Noroton Heights Fire Department personnel also contacted the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to notify them of the spillage.
