The incident was reported Monday, Nov. 25. The complainant told police that she had purchased a cookie for her 7-year-old daughter at Panera that evening. When the girl bit into the cookie, she found a hard object inside that was later determined to be a metal nail about 2 inches long, police said.
Police spoke with employees at Panera, who said the cookies come pre-made from a distributor based in Harrisburg, Pa., and are baked in the store immediately after they are removed from the package. Investigators believe the nail wound up in the cookie by accident during the manufacturing process, according to police reports.
“There is no reason to suspect that this was done intentionally,” Capt. Don Anderson said Monday.
No injuries or illnesses were reported in the incident. The case was still under investigation by Darien Police.
