Four Charged With Using Fake Gift Cards In Darien

DARIEN, Conn. — Darien police arrested four New Yorkers and charged them with trying to use fake gift cards at several Darien stores Friday.

Four people were attempting to use fraudulent gift cards to purchase $439.10 worth of alcohol at Frate's Liquors on Post Road, according to a call to police at 5 p.m. Friday. Employees denied the transaction, and the four left. The group then tried to purchase cigarettes at the Exxon station at 1358 Post Road, again using bogus gift cards, police said. The transaction was again denied.

The group then moved on to the Gulf station at 1044 Post Road, where they allegedly tried to use fake gift cards to buy two cartons of cigarettes, police said. Once again, the transaction was denied, police said.

A service station employee reported seeing one of the back seat passengers with a black handgun, police said. Police caught up with the four at the Gulf station and removed them from their car at gunpoint. No weapon was found.

Police charged Shannia Devon, 20, of Brooklyn, Nathaniel Hall, 20, of New York, Gerald Jones, 21, of Rockaway, and Kidane Joseph, 31, of New York with three counts of sixth-degree criminal attempt to larceny. Devon was given an additional charge of interfering with an officer after police said she refused to hand over her identification.

Devon and Joseph were released on written promises to appear in court. Hall and Jones both posted $150 bonds. All four are set to appear in court July 16.
