Darien Police Charge Mass. Driver With Car Theft

DARIEN, Conn. – A Massachusetts man was arrested Sunday in Darien after he passed an officer on the Post Road and the officer's license plate reader indicated the car the man was driving might be stolen.

Moises Afonso, 53, was charged with second-degree larceny, fifth-degree larceny and operating without a license.

According to police reports, Afonso was driving a 2008 Chevy Suburban when he passed an officer on the Post Road. Police said Afonso got onto I-95 south and was stopped at the Exit 10 ramp.

Afonso was removed from the car at gunpoint, and police determined that the car had been stolen in West Springfield, Mass., a few days earlier. During a search of the car, police found a laptop and checkbooks, which they determined had been stolen out of a car in Springfield, Mass., on July 5, according to the police report.

Police said that Afonso has an extensive criminal record, which includes auto theft. He was arrested and held in lieu of a $20,000 bond. He went to court Monday morning.

The following was also reported in the Darien police blotter:

Several unlocked cars were entered on Colony Road. The thefts were discovered Saturday morning.

Four of the cars belonged to one residence. Residents reported that a wallet was taken. It was later recovered, but police said $100 had been taken. A Tom Tom GPS of unknown value was taken out of a car at another residence on Colony Road.
