Charges Filed Against Darien's White Powder Pranksters

DARIEN, Conn. – Two Darien 17-year-olds now face criminal charges for a prank involving a suspicious white powder delivered to two homes earlier this month, police said.

Over Labor Day weekend, two Darien homes received letters containing a white powder and a note, police said. Federal and state officials were initially called in as a precaution, but investigators determined that no people were at risk from the deliveries.

Two teenage girls later came forward and admitted that they had sent the envelopes as a prank, according to police reports. The powder was found to be a “nontoxic food product.”

The two girls were referred to the juvenile court for possible criminal action. Darien Police decided to press charges against the two, and they turned themselves in Monday.

Both were charged with a breach of the peace, second-degree threatening, and conspiracy to commit those two crimes. Their names have not been released, because both are under the age of 18. They are due in juvenile court later this month.
