Storms Roar Through County

Severe storms pounded towns across Lower Fairfield County this evening, downing trees, knocking out power and affecting commuters. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch, which expired at 11.p.m. Downed trees, high winds, hail and heavy rain were reported.

As of 11 p.m Westport experienced winds that took down trees all over town, leaving about 4,200 CL&P customers in the dark. Wilton experienced 2,500 outages and New Canaan, 1,475 and Stamford about 770. "We will deal with these problems well into this evening and well into tomorrow," Mitch Gross, a Cl&P spokesman. told News Channel 12.

The United Illuminating Co. reported 3,500 customers without power In Fairfield at 10:30 p.m. By Thursday morning power was restored to all but 75 customers.

Metro-North suspended service on the Danbury line because of a downed tree in Wilton. Downed trees and power outages were reported thorughout Lower Fairfield County. Earlier tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings have expired.
