Red Mass Offers Guidance to Lawyers

The separation of church and state has long been a subject of debate. It can be even more difficult to address when the struggle is internal. This Sunday, the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist in Stamford will celebrate its annual Red Mass to help legal professionals reconcile matters of state with issues of conscience. The principal celebrant and homilist will be the Most Rev. Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York. Legal practitioners and members of the public are invited.

The main speaker will be Richard W. Garnett, associate dean and professor of law at the University of Notre Dame. Garnett writes and teaches about the relationship among society, politics and religious believers. He is the author of book chapters and articles. His current research project is titled "Two There Are: Understanding the Separation of Church and State."

Catholic legal practitioners and their challenges and responsibilities are the special focus of the Red Mass, which asks for spiritual guidance for all those seeking justice. Attorney James F. Stapleton chairs the Red Mass Committee.

The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist is located at 279 Atlantic St., Stamford. The Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. A brunch will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Stamford.
