The accident was reported at about 12:47 p.m. Tuesday, causing traffic tie-ups for miles, State Police said.
No other injuries were reported. The identity of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin. The crash had first been reported as a car vs. tractor-trailer by the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
Two to three lanes of the northbound highway were closed for up to three hours after the fatal accident between Exits 9 and 10 on I-95, DOT said.
The accident backed up traffic for over 7 miles on northbound I-95 — back to Exit 3 for Arch Street in Greenwich and up to the accident site in Darien, DOT said.
Traffic tie-ups had also been reported in the southbound lanes of I-95 for about 1.7 miles near the crash scene, DOT said.
But the accident scene was cleared at about 3:45 p.m. and all lanes were reopened. Residual delays were reported on the northbound side of I-95 but the southbound side was flowing.
