Lieberman Office Evacuated Due To Suspicious Mail

HARTFORD, Conn. – U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s Hartford office was evacuated Thursday afternoon after employees received a suspicious package.

Senate offices received notice from the Senate Sergeant at Arms on Wednesday morning to be on the lookout for suspicious packages, said Whitney Phillips, Lieberman’s Washington spokeswoman.

When Lieberman staffers were sorting mail at lunchtime Thursday, they found a package with the return address that they had been warned about. The package was secluded, and local authorities were contacted.

Phillips said the office was not immediately evacuated, but employees were asked to leave at about 4 p.m. Lieberman, a Democrat who lives in Stamford, was not in the office because he was attending events throughout Connecticut all day.

After the office was evacuated, police removed the package. Phillips said everyone in the office was safe and sound. Several other members of the Senate have received suspicious packages and letters, she said.
