The Darien Town Hall parking lot will be filled with trucks, tractors, fire engines and trains when OPUS hosts its eighth annual Big Rig Gig to benefit Person-to-Person this Sunday. Children will be able to see and climb behind the wheel of 25 kinds of trucks. Raffles, bouncy castles, food, music and a sports area will also be offered. "It's like a big carnival with trucks," OPUS member Marni Lane says.
OPUS is the fundraising arm for Person-to-Person, a volunteer-driven network that helps neighbors in the Darien, Norwalk and Stamford area by providing basic necessities. The organization is run out of St. Luke's Church in Darien and helps more than 24,000 people every year.
"We raised more than $30,000 last year, which was our biggest Big Rig Gig to date," Lane said. "It's always a huge success."
The event will feature a range of trucks, including excavators, backhoes and big rigs, as well as motorcycles and cars. Train rides through the parking lot will be offered, and kids can meet the Bridgeport Sound Tigers mascot. "It will have everything kids love," said Lane.
OPUS Co-President Beth Williams said, "OPUS volunteers have worked diligently for the past several months to put a wonderful event together, which includes so many new attractions this year, including performances by dancers from Pender Keady Academy of Irish Dance and the Darien High School Gymnastics team."
The event will be held in the lower parking lot of Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or inside the Town Hall gym if it rains. Admission is $35 for a family of six, which includes unlimited moon bounces. Additional admission is $5 per person. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online.
