DARIEN, Conn. Members of the Darien Police Department dropped off more than 200 coats at Person-to-Person on Thursday morning. The charity was happy to get the coats but said it was looking for more donations for people in need this holiday season.
Were overjoyed. Our clients will be thrilled, said Kathleen Bordelon, director of volunteers. But more people are in need of clothing this year than last year, she said.
The economy is not improving tremendously, and people do need coats. Now many will be able to find coats and keep warm thanks to the generosity of the community and the police.
Officer Dan Skoumbros organized the departments first coat drive last year and said this year brought in even more coats. He and his fellow officers plan to continue collecting coats in the future.
I think its great. Especially after last years winter, theres no better time to give coats. The community really came out to support us. We even got some coats this morning as we were packing up to drop them off.
Person-to-Person Executive Director Ceci Maher said the timing was perfect because its still warm, and some people havent had a need yet for winter coats.
Were still in the middle of our annual appeal for donations, Maher said. One of the most important services it provides is emergency financial aid to help people pay rent, bills, child care and medical costs. The need is great. We really want to be sure that we have the financial resources to help people with their financial needs.
The group is always willing to accept clothes. Shoes go the fastest, and childrens coats are also in high demand. It also wants items that some people might not think to donate, such as blankets, sheets and small household appliances. They will take anything from the house except furniture.
Board games are also needed. Person-to-Persons toy store is opening next week, and families will receive a board game as well as a toy and book for every child. About 600 board games are needed, Maher said, but the group has enough copies of Chutes and Ladders and Candyland.
