Volunteers Beautify Darien Train Station Area

DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien Beautification Commission and the Tree Conservancy of Darien have combined forces to improve the view of those who use the Darien train station.

The Beautification Commission decided that the embankment between the eastbound Metro-North Railroad tracks and Squab Lane was weedy, unkempt and needed a face lift. Commission member David May was brought in to redesign the area.

May added a mix of grasses and perennials, using mainly native species. Connecticut native plants such as coneflowers, black-eyed Susan and coreopsis were added to give the space color.

May describes the design as “mainly a summer/fall design. When it matures I hope it will provide a welcome contrast for commuters returning from a tough day in the city.”

The Tree Conservancy joined in the project and offered to plant a number of trees. Seven trees, including dogwood, serviceberry and blackgum, were added.

“The Tree Conservancy of Darien was delighted to contribute the trees, and is now proud to have planted 22 trees on public rights of way since 2010,” said John Schlachtenhaufen, chair of the conservancy’s Stewardship Committee.

The plants and trees were added to the site with the help of Department of Public Works Highway Supervisor George Swift and his team, the Darien High School Ecocitizens and Garden Clubs, the friends and family of the Burma Castle estate, Penny Glassmeyer and Anna Mazabras.
