DARIEN, Conn. – A local nonprofit that provides support services to low-income people and families has received a $20,000 grant to fund a scholarship for a college-bound teen.

Person-to-Person (P2P) recently received the grant, which will help fund four years of higher education for one of the nonprofit’s Mentoring4Success Scholarship winners, according to a statement from the group.

Provided by the Municipal Bond Insurance Association (MBIA) Foundation, the grant is designed to have a “lasting impact on the lives of those struggling to meet basic needs,” according to the statement.

P2P Executive Director Ceci Maher said her agency’s programs align with that aim.

“From budget counseling to job training, P2P is dedicated to supporting a client’s journey toward self-sufficiency,” she said. “The P2P Scholarship Program helps college students from low-income households realize that goal by bridging the gap between what each can earn and save and the amount needed to attend college.”

According to P2P, the Mentoring4Success Scholarship is presented to incoming first-year students who work collaboratively with individual mentors throughout their four years to maximize the opportunities offered by a higher education.

While 80 percent of P2P scholars complete college overall, the Mentoring4Success program has a 100 percent graduation rate, Maher said.

“This grant from the MBIA Foundation grant is greatly appreciated,” she said. “It will give one student the opportunity to pursue a college education and, by offering a pathway out of poverty, will help transform that student’s life.”
