Ice Cream Fans Flip on Gofer Day

The weather outside may have been frightful, but inside the Gofer Ice Cream store in Darien the treats were delightful. In celebration of Groundhog Day, the four local branches of the frozen treat dispensary staged their first annual Gofer Day, where customers could flip a token to win either a free cone or a discount coupon for their next visit.

Despite, or perhaps because of, the ice storm that swept through the area in the morning, the turnout was surprisingly strong. “I think it was because kids were off from school and everyone wanted to get out of the house,” said Liza Pogosian as she worked the late evening shift in Darien. “Just in the three hours I’ve been here at least 10 families with four or five kids have come in.”

Even at 9 p.m. as the mercury continued to drop outside, customers trickled in. Alan Steckler and his son Tim were the last of them, and Alan joked that the above-freezing temperatures during the day made it feel “like spring, perfect weather for ice cream.”

“Besides, when you finish eating it, you feel warmer,” he postulated. Whether that was the reason or to celebrate Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of an early spring, there was a steady stream of warm weather wishers flipping for ice cream on Groundhog Day.
