DARIEN, Conn. The Noroton Heights Fire Department in Darien recently donated essential supplies such as linens, pillows and toiletries to the residents of two Domestic Violence Crisis Center SafeHouses.
The Noroton Heights Fire Department worked with the Darien Domestic Abuse Partnership, which comprises more than 30 people who live and work in Darien, including police officers, physicians, social workers, nurses, lawyers, community leaders, coaches, and state and local officials. The partnership provides awareness and runs events to educate the community about domestic violence, as well as working with local groups to generate support for the services provided to victims by the crisis center.
The crime of domestic violence is devastating to families, whether in Darien or in other communities throughout Connecticut, said Susan Warren, chair of the partnership. The Darien Police Department received 121 domestic violence calls in the past year, and we want to ensure that everyone knows help is available for victims of abuse.
Other groups that have donated to the crisis center's SafeHouses are the Talmadge Hill Church and the Calvary Baptist Church. The SafeHouses provide free, confidential services including court and legal services, group and individual counseling, temporary shelter, housing services, children's services, medical advocacy, professional adult training and multilingual services.
In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the partnership will release butterflies on Sept. 30 as part of its second Healing Wings of Hope event at the Darien Nature Center.
