Darien Sylvan Tutor Brings Out Students' Best

The former classroom of Donna Napolitano was an outward expression of her nurturing style. It was a warm and inviting environment that was conducive to learning, she said.  However, the organized room with posters displaying directions and rules indicated that “this lady means business!”

“They used to say I was firm, but fair,” she said with a smile. Napolitano followed that philosophy in the 28 years she taught elementary school students in the Stamford School District. She's continuing on the same path now as a tutor for Sylvan Learning Center in Darien.

Napolitano also said she is deeply committed to educating the “whole child.” She enjoys creating the kind of teaching environment where kids can feel comfortable taking risks, meeting personal goals and developing positive study habits.

“It’s my job to find out what my students are good at, and to help them achieve beyond what they think they can,” Napolitano said. Tutoring at Sylvan Learning Center has also rejuvenated her zest for teaching since she retired from the Stamford School District 13 years ago, she said.

“Continually working with the same students every week, you can see their growth. In a class of 25 students, you may not see the fruits of your labor for many years.”

This was evident recently when Napolitano ran into one of her former students working at a local CVS pharmacy. He told her she was one of his favorite teachers growing up and was very happy to see her. He thanked her so many years later.

“When I left the CVS, I felt like I was floating. You never know who you’re going to influence.” In the three decades that marked her teaching career, Napolitano was nominated twice for "Teacher of the Year," and was recipient of the prestigious Celebration of Excellence Award, sponsored by the State of Connecticut.
