DARIEN, Conn. - Stony Brook Park is one of the few places in Darien where you can let your dog run free without a leash. Darien Eagle Scout candidate Andrew Fletcher wants to help make the park more accessible to dogs and their owners.
"From what I've heard from dog owners, they've been saying it could use some development," Fletcher said.
The Darien High School junior wants to build a fence between the park and a neighboring property, which would prevent dogs from roaming into other people's yards. He would also like to clear and mark a trail through the woods so that people can walk their dogs. At a few points along the trail he also wants to add stations with bags for animal waste.
"I think that would be a good convenience for the people visiting the park, so that htey wouldn't have animal waste everywhere."
After reaching out to members of the Darien Dog Owners Group, who said that they wished for more room to play with the dogs, Fletcher wants to create a clearing at Stony Brook that would provide space for ball throwing and running around.
Fletcher plans on reaching out to local vendors to secure donations for building materials. He wants to get started on the project in early September. "Usually for scout projects, we're able to get a large number of volunteers from other scouts and their families. I think it could take maybe one or two weekends to do it all."
Fletcher still needs official permission from the town. At a recent meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission, members were enthusiastic about the project, and said they would vote on the project when he had finalized his plans.
