Darien Mom Helps Women Venture Into Business

DARIEN, Conn. – When Darien resident Holly Hurd started her Venture Mom website, she met many women who wanted to start their own small businesses but had no idea what they wanted to do.

But Hurd believes that if you give her an hour, she will figure out what you should be doing.

“I’m sort of like a venture detective, in a sense,” she said. “I believe everyone has a venture in them. My value is talking to them and pulling that venture out of them.”

Hurd started the website to showcase moms who started their own small businesses and to provide resources to other women hoping to achieve something similar. She now offers a VentureHour, where she talks with women for an hour to help them determine what kind of business they want to start and how to get it going.

She has also written an ebook on launching a venture in just 12 weeks, similar to a series of columns that she wrote last year for The Daily Darien.

Thinking up ideas for businesses that other women can start comes naturally, Hurd said. While talking with a friend who had a passion for gardening, Hurd realized that she could charge people to help them prepare flowerbeds. Another woman was a dental hygienist who loved dogs, so Hurd helped her start a business cleaning dogs’ teeth.

Hurd, who has helped women all over the country, sends weekly newsletters and makes regular Facebook posts to keep people updated. She says it is important not only to cover what each mom has done, but also to follow the growth of their businesses to inspire other women.
