DARIEN, Conn. The past year has been one of upheaval in the Middle East, and the Darien Community Association will host a series of talks about the aftermath of the Arab Spring. The association's 2012 Academic Lecture Series on Global Issues will be held Thursdays at 10 a.m.
The series looks at the conflict from the perspective of organizations and countries that have been affected by unrest in the Middle East. Speakers will include experts on Islamic organizations, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The final lecture will focus on how the United States has been impacted.
Thursday, Michael Singh from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy will discuss Israel and the Arab Spring. Next week former ambassador Richard Murphy will deliver Saudi Arabia: The Arab Spring Passes By. On Jan. 26, Haleh Esfandiari from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars talk on Iran and the Arab Spring: Glee and Gloom. The series concludes Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. when Robin Wright, a Wilson Center Distinguished Scholar and author of Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World will speak on The Future of the Middle East.
Tickets for the series are $65 for DCA members and $80 for non-members. Tickets for the evening reception are $25.
