Darien Fitness Studio Hosts Dance Party this Week

Just how strong are the bonds between the staff and women who exercise at Flair Fitness Studio in Darien? So strong that co-owner Amy Shelton will speed-dial one of them from her iPhone in an emergency.

Just last week, a member had a car land in her front yard. When Shelton found out, she immediately called to make sure everyone was okay. Luckily, they were.

“Around 600 ladies come here every month, and we’re all friends,” Shelton said. “It’s a community environment.”

That casual atmosphere is also what allows Shelton and business partner Peg Perez to have fun with the classes they offer. On Wednesday May 2, Flair Fitness Studio will host its Spring Fling Dance Party. The event will feature a Zumba class led by guest instructor Antonio Thomas, who will make the trip from New York City.

“Zumba is just a fun way to exercise, and the music is hypnotic,” Shelton said. “When we opened the studio in September 2010, no one was really offering it in Darien, so we brought it to town.”

According to Shelton, the Spring Fling Dance Party should attract people of all ages from Darien, New Canaan, Rowayton, and Stamford.

“It’s not unusual to have a high school girl and a grandmother in the same class."

The class-based studio has also been able to keep members on the cutting edge of fitness since opening. Shelton and Perez have recently introduced Piloxing, a new workout style that mixes Pilates with boxing moves.

“A lot of people like Pilates, and this is a great combination of cardio, stretching and mat work. It’s also done to music,” she added.

Flair Fitness Studio will host its Spring Fling Dance Party on Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. The studio is located at 551 Post Road. Tickets are $15 with preregistration, $20 at the door. Click here for more information.
