Rob and Kit Rohn and their children were among the recipients of the aquarium’s 16th annual Red Apple Awards, which honor companies, organizations and individuals who share The Maritime Aquarium’s concern for the natural world and environmental education.
The awards were presented during the annual Cirque de la Mer gala on April 26. This event supports The Maritime Aquarium’s Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment, which helps to make the aquarium’s marine-science and environmental-education programs available to schools in the tri-state area regardless of their ability to pay.
Of the $800,000 raised, $120,000 is earmarked to help schools meet the cost of busing for field trips to the aquarium.
The 400 guests at the event had cocktails in the aquarium galleries, a sit-down dinner and participated in silent and live auctions.
Rob Rohn, a founding principal with Sustainable Growth Advisers, is the chairman of The Maritime Aquarium’s board of trustees. He’s been a board member since 2006.
Kit Rohn has worked for Inform, an environmental research organization, and the National Audubon Society, which was chaired nationally for 15 years by her late father, Donal O’Brian. She also is a founding member of Conservation International.
Their children also have been active at The Maritime Aquarium. Katie served an aquarium internship, and Nick has been a volunteer.
“As board chairman, Rob guides the aquarium with intellect, patience and commitment,” said aquarium President Brian Davis in a press release “He and Kit always bring a warm graceful presence and passion to their involvement. They inspire us, and we are grateful for all they have done for The Maritime Aquarium.”
Other 2015 Red Apple Awards recipients are the family of Michael and Nancy Herde of Boston (formerly of New Canaan) and the Norwalk law firm of Shipman & Goodwin, LLP, most notably senior partner Michael Widland.
