Chris Shays' Five Favorite Things About Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – When Chris Shays was growing up in Darien, he used to ride his bicycle all over town. It’s one of his fondest memories of his hometown. But there is one thing that tops his list of favorite things about Darien.

“I met my wife there,” the U.S. Senate hopeful and former Fairfield County congressman said. He first met his wife, Betsi, when they were in eighth grade and started dating her when they were seniors together at Darien High School.

“Whenever I drive through Darien I’m filled with memories,” he said. The town also was a place where he forged deep friendships, he said.

“Some of my best friends go back to my high school days. I can see my high school friends today, and it’s like we were never apart.”

His education in Darien definitely made a lasting impression on him. He can still remember all the words to Hindley Elementary’s school song. And although Darien is a rather homogeneous community, Shays is grateful that his teachers exposed him to the rest of the world.

“I can name you five or six teachers that had an incredible impact on my life. I had great teachers, and I can’t imagine that I could have gotten a better education anywhere else in the world.”

Among his other favorite memories about growing up in Darien are crabbing and fishing, spending time at the Tokeneke Club and playing basketball and football after school with his buddies.
