Study Names Connecticut The Fourth Best State To Have A Baby

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- With August being one of the most popular months for newborn arrivals, and with Americans paying the highest birthing costs in the world, Connecticut residents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that a recent study has named the Nutmeg State as one of the best states to have a baby.

A new ranking by the personal finance website WalletHub has named Connecticut one of the best states to have a baby.

The personal finance website WalletHub compared data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia to determine 2017's best and worst states to have a baby. Connecticut ranked fourth best on the list. Vermont was named the best state to have a baby, while Mississippi was named the worst, according to WalletHub.

WalletHub looked at 20 key metrics to create its list, include charges for conventional delivery at hospitals, average annual infant care costs, and the number of pediatricians per capita. Overall, Connecticut ranked 42nd in terms of cost, ninth in terms of health care accessibility, third in terms of baby friendliness and ninth in terms of family friendliness, according to WalletHub.

Infant Mortality Rate: 18th
Rate of Low Birth-Weight: 24th
Midwives and OB-GYNs per Capita: 15th
Pediatricians and Family Doctors per Capita: 9th
Child-Care Centers per Capita: 18th
Parental-Leave Policy Score: 5th
