DANBURY, Conn. U.S. Sen. John McCain is coming to Danbury to campaign for Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon, according to McMahon supporter Mayor Mark Boughton.
The Arizona Republican will join McMahon Monday at noon at the Disabled American Veterans facility at 25 Segar St. Later that day McCain is expected to travel to Norwalk for another campaign stop.
McMahon, a business executive, is in a tight race against Democratic Congressman Chris Murphy for the soon-to-be-vacated Senate seat held by Joe Lieberman, who is retiring.
During the Republican primary, McCain endorsed McMahons rival, former Congressman Chris Shays, with whom McCain served in Washington from the late 1980s to 2009.
Boughton took to Twitter Monday afternoon to announce the McCain visit. Boughton said McCain was last in Danbury in 2004 during President George W. Bushs successful re-election campaign.
Sen. McCain is a national hero, and its an honor to have him in Danbury, Boughton said. Im looking forward to it.
McCain, a Navy veteran, is a former presidential candidate and one of the most recognizable politicians in the United States. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986.
