Bridgeport Braces For First Notable Winter Storm Of The Season

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Brace for it: It's time to drag out the heavy sweaters and coats – and even the shovel and salt – as the first big notable winter storm of the season heads into Fairfield County.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected Monday night into Tuesday morning across Fairfield County, even along the shoreline. A Winter Weather Advisory will begin at 8 p.m. Monday and last until 6 a.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

The forecast calls for sleet, freezing rain, light snow, and ice accumulation. 

Weather officials are alerting residents to be ready for slippery roadways and sidewalks, with the main threat being to elevated surfaces and higher elevations.

There is also a gale warning in effect for Long Island Sound from 6 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday with winds from 20 to 40 knots with 6 -to 10-foot seas.

The conditions will be hazardous for small crafts and inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these condition, the National Weather Service said.

Here is the forecast:

Monday: It will be partly sunny, with a high near 40 degrees with wind chills of 30 to 35 degrees. 

Monday night: There is a chance of snow, freezing rain, and sleet between 9 p.m. and midnight, then freezing rain and sleet. The low will be about 30 degrees with wind chills of 20 to 25 degrees. East winds of 9 to 16 mph will blow with gusts as high as 28 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent. A new ice accumulation of less than a tenth of an inch is possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Tuesday: Rain and sleet will become all rain after 8 a.m. The high temperature will be near 45 with wind chills of 20 to 30 degrees. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New sleet accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible.

Tuesday night: It will be mostly cloudy, with a temperature of 42 degrees.
