Finch, Himes, Blumenthal, and Murphy Announce $10 Million for Sandy Relief in Bridgeport

Ø  WHO: Congressman Jim Himes, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Senator Chris Murphy, Mayor Bill Finch, Harriet Tregoning (Director of HUD's Office of Economic Resilience), and Nick Lundgren (Deputy Commissioner, Connecticut Department of Housing) Ø  WHAT: Press Conference on Bridgeport Resiliency Grant Ø  WHEN: Today @ Noon Ø  WHERE: Seaside Park, Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604 Bridgeport – Today, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch will join Congressman Jim Himes (D4), Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) for a press conference to highlight a $10 million federal grant for Bridgeport coastal resiliency projects following Superstorm Sandy. The grant will be used to plan and develop disaster mitigation projects in the Black Rock, Marina Village, and Sea Side Village communities. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant - Disaster Recovery Program to help implement innovative resiliency projects proposed in the Rebuild by Design competition, including Resilient Bridgeport. The press conference will take place at Bridgeport’s Seaside Park, behind the P.T. Barnum statue. Following the press conference, Mayor Finch and David Kooris, Bridgeport's director of planning and economic development, will take members of the media on a walking tour to show how the grant will be used to help fortify specific areas that have been prone to flooding. “This is great news for our city,” said Finch. “We put forth a vision to make Bridgeport a city where in order to mitigate climate change, we’re creating green jobs while investing in the future to make our city a more resilient place for our kids and grandkids to live, work, and raise a family. These much needed funds will help us to continue doing just that. I want to thank Congressman Himes, Senator Blumenthal, Senator Murphy, President Obama, Shaun Donovan and others at HUD for their confidence in the Park City.”
