Trump is positioned to sweep the 28 delegates at stake in the Republican primary, with 50 percent of likely Republican voters saying they will vote for the billionaire businessman in the poll.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who held a rally recently in Fairfield, is in second place at 26 percent, with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas at 17 percent, the poll says. Cruz could be shut out of the delegate count if he fails to win 20 percent of the statewide or Congressional district vote.
Six percent of GOP primary voters are undecided.
Trump, who held a rally Friday in Hartford, holds a lead in all five Congressional districts, by margins of 18 percentage points to 38 percentage points, the Emerson College Poll says.
If Trump gets 50 percent of the vote and wins in all five of the state’s congressional districts, as the Emerson Poll projects, he would take home all 28 of Connecticut’s Republican delegates.
Trump has picked up support in the Nutmeg State as other candidates dropped out of the race. In a November poll from Emerson College, Trump was the top choice of Connecticut Republicans but came in with just 25 percent of the vote.
In the Democratic race, Clinton leads U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont by 49 percent to 43 percent, with 6 percent of likely voters undecided, the poll says.
Because Connecticut is a closed primary, voters must be a member of a political party to take part in the primary on April 26.
When Independents and Republican in the poll expressed support for Sanders were added to the Democratic primary numbers, Sanders closed the gap with Clinton to 1 percentage point — 47 percent vs. to 46 percent.
“This suggests that if Sanders can persuade his non-Democratic supporters in Connecticut to re-register as Democrats, he could pull off a win without relying on a last-minute swing by younger registered Democrats,” according to a statement with the poll results.
Sanders leads Clinton 58 percent to 39 percent among voters ages 18 to 34, but Clinton holds a 51 percent to 42 percent edge in the 35 to 54 age group and is up 59 percent to 41 percent among voters ages 55 to 74.
Gender is also a significant factor in the Democratic contest, with male voters preferring Sanders over Clinton 51 percent to 42 percent and women favoring the former secretary of state 55 percent to 36 percent.
Connecticut’s 55 pledged Democratic delegates are allocated proportionally, based on the primary vote.
The Emerson Poll has a margin of error of 5.2 percent.
