One of two men responsible for the death of a 14-year-old Bridgeport teen pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and possession of a pistol without a permit just before heading to trial for his murder, according to the State's Attorney Office.

Michael "Smitty" Majors, 24, was about to go to trial for the death of Luis Colon who was gunned down during a gun battle between Major and Garth Minto on Christmas Eve 2015.

Majors faces 40 years in prison when he is sentenced March 16, but Luis Colon's mother, Solmarie Rivera has a right to argue for more and to make a victim impact statement during the sentencing, said Senior Assistant State's Attorney Howard Stein.

Colon was caught in the crossfire during a trip to the store to pick up some last minute items for his mother, police said. He was crossing State Street eating a bag of candy when he was shot in the back.

Surveillance video from the shootout shows both men draw handguns and fire at each other, both missing. It also shows Luis falling onto the street.

Horrified residents later turned out in the hundreds to attend a candlelight vigil in his honor.

Minto, 23, is awaiting trial for murder. He claims, as did Majors, that he fired in self-defense.

Police never recovered either gun and have been unable to say which man fired the shot that killed the boy.
