“We have almost 300,000 calls from citizens every year in our telecommunications center, which is the heartbeat of our city,” said Finch. “We just want to give them the honor that they deserve for a job well done.”
Assistant Police Chief James Nardozzi echoed those sentiments.
“The staff here works hard. They work 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Nardozzi. “No one ever calls 911 to say thank you. That’s why we are here today.”
Finch and Nardozzi recognized the 911 operators Wednesday during National Telecommunicators Week.
“Bridgeport is getting better every day, and that starts with people feeling safe. These telecommunicators are an important part if that,” he added.
The call takers are the calming voice on the other end of the phone when people dial 911 in an emergency.
“When people call 911, they usually are in crisis. They might be injured or feel threatened. They need help, and the telecommunicators are the reassuring voices who gather information and get them help, whether from our police officers, our firefighters or paramedics," Finch said. "None of this works without great 911 operators.”
