Kevin Joseph Sutherland, 24, struggled with his attacker, who had grabbed his cellphone from his waist, in the attack just before 1 p.m. Saturday, July 4, according to the Post, which cited a police arrest affidavit filed in court.

Police said Jasper Squires, who has been charged with murder, was using synthetic drugs, which can cause psychotic and violent behavior, the Post said.

After the fatal stabbing, Squires robbed two other passengers before the attack on Sutherland and another before fleeing the train at the the NoMa-Gallaudet stop, the Post said.
