Extra trains will be departing from Grand Central Terminal beginning on Friday at about 1 p.m. Because of reduced ridership, some evening trains may be canceled or combined. Check the timetable at the Metro-North website.

Metro-North will operate on a regular Saturday schedule on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, and on a Sunday schedule for Christmas, Dec. 25.

Since most businesses will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26, which is a federal holiday, Metro-North will operate on a Saturday schedule with additional "Shoppers' Specials" trains.

For the week between Christmas and New Year's (Dec. 27 to 30), Metro-North will operate a weekday schedule with reduced morning peak service and additional inbound service operating in the late morning.

People traveling with family and friends can purchase an off-peak 10-trip ticket. In addition to the discounted price, it is transferable, so everyone riding can use it. Riders are encouraged to use MTA eTix , the mobile ticketing app where riders can take care of their ticket needs on a smartphone or mobile device.

Look for that early getaway service on Friday, Dec. 30. On New Year's Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, Metro-North will operate a special schedule. The schedule will include extra inbound late afternoon and early evening service. There will also be morning service early on New Year's Day for late-night revelers.

Riders are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance: Those taking early morning New Year service will have tickets collected before boarding trains at Grand Central. On New Year's Day, Sunday, Jan. 1, Metro-North will operate a Sunday schedule. The "Shoppers' Specials" trains will run on Monday, Jan. 2.

Look for special Christmas/New Year's Timetable on the Metro-North schedules page, in Grand Central, and at outlying ticket offices. Riders can also download a free Train Time App on an iPhone or Android.
