Congressman Steve Scalise and one or more aides were among those shot at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., on Wednesday morning, according to NBC News.
The gunman was shot and was taken into custody following the incident, which occurred after 7 a.m. at Alexandria Simpson Baseball Field. NBC News is reporting that as many as 50 shots were fired.
The gunman reportedly was armed with an assault rifle and pistol and began firing from behind the dugout after asking an onlooker if the Congressmen practicing were Republicans or Democrats.
Scalise, the Republican Majority Whip, represents Louisiana. He was seen crawling into the outfield after being shot near second base, NBC News said. A total of five people, including the shooter, suffered injuries, according to reports.
"Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover," President Donald Trump tweeted just before 9 a.m. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him."
The practice was being held before the annual Congressional baseball game scheduled to be played Thursday at the Washington Nationals' baseball park.
About 25 U.S. senators and congressmen were at the practice. Because Scalise holds a senior leadership position, there was extra security on hand, possibility thwarting what could have been a deadly incident.
