Bloodroot In Bridgeport Ranks Among DVlicious Soup Finalists

We asked for your top picks for our DVlicious “Best Soup in Fairfield County” contest and whittled it down to five finalists. Each has been profiled this week with the winner selected Monday, Feb. 22. Here’s a “bowl-ful” rundown on one of them.

Worth Dishing About: Open since 1977, Bloodroot is a feminist vegetarian restaurant/bookstore serving a seasonal menu in the city’s Black Rock neighborhood. Selma Miriam and Noel Furie, the two current members of the Bloodroot Collective that founded the establishment, and their all-female part-time staff, use all-natural ingredients in their cooking. 

Some of their most popular soups include escarole with garlic and cannelini beans, shiitake mushroom, black bean topped with avocado and “schee,” a Russian tomato and cabbage soup with sauerkraut.

Once called “a salon for activists” by The New York Times, the restaurant runs a little differently than most. There’s no cash register and no waitressing. Guests place their orders with a woman seated behind a desk after making their choice from the blackboard menu. They then enjoy their food either in the comfortable dining room or out on the patio overlooking Black Rock Harbor, and bus their own tables when they are through.
