Oliver Hernandez-Caballero, 26, of Damascus, was sentenced on Tuesday, April 1, to 25 years in prison with all but 14 years suspended after being convicted of first-degree child abuse, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He will serve five years of supervised probation when he is released.

The abuse happened on Dec. 28, 2023, when Hernandez-Caballero was alone at home with the baby girl at a residence on Woodfield Road in Damascus, court documents state.

Around 9 p.m., he called 911 and claimed the child was having trouble breathing and feeding.

She was rushed to Shady Grove Hospital, then transferred to Children’s National Medical Center with injuries doctors described as severe and extensive.

Those injuries included a skull fracture, brain hemorrhages, retinal hemorrhages, internal bleeding, rib fractures in various stages of healing, bruising, and lacerations to internal organs, prosecutors said.

The baby survived but was hospitalized for a month with seizure activity.

During a voluntary interview with investigators, Hernandez-Caballero admitted to shaking and punching the infant in the stomach multiple times — including just hours before he called for help.

He said he noticed the baby struggling to breathe after punching her. He also told detectives this wasn’t the first time he had abused the child.

Hernandez-Caballero was arrested on Jan. 9, 2024, and found guilty by a jury on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
