Vanessa V. Schwartz "stepped into traffic" when she was struck and killed on Sunday, March 10 just before 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County, Virginia State Police said.

Vanessa was struck by a Honda Accord unable to avoid her, which was then struck by a 2021 Acura RDX, police said. The Acura struck the jersey wall and a 2023 Nissan Rogue, police said.

A GoFundMe launched for Vanessa's husband, Michael, and 8-month-old daughter, Lucy, had raised more than $20,000 as of Tuesday, March 11. The campaign remembered Vanessa as a devoted mother, wife, and daughter.

"She was a sweet, generous, loving, and caring woman whose life was cut short by the negligence of a driver for what was supposed to be a safe ride home," the campaign says.
