Over the summer, officers were called to investigate a midday shooting in the 100 block of Farragut Street NW, where they found the father of six suffering from a gunshot wound inside an area residence, investigators said.
The homicide was reported shortly before 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 30. Childs was rushed by DC Fire and EMS personnel to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Following a months-long investigation, officials announced on Tuesday that Bowie resident Iesha Marks, 29, has been arrested in connection to his murder, and she was charged with premeditated first-degree murder while armed.
Childs - also known as "Funny" to friends and family - "was just that, a loving, giving, caring, happy, and funny guy," according to his mother, who organized a GoFundMe campaign following his death.
"It has been extremely hard for them to accept this tragedy and losing their father so senselessly," Wanda Childs wrote.
"My sister and my son were all the family I had left, so thank God for my grandchildren — we know it will not be easy so they can always lean on me for strength and we will keep each other uplifted and strong during these difficult and trying times."
