On Friday, June 9, the DC Police Department issued an alert regarding a large black bear that was hanging out in a tree in the 1300 block of Franklin Street NE, leading to road closures in the area as Animal Care and Control personnel responded.

A crowd of dozens of people wound up watching the bear until it attempted to make its great escape.

The bear enjoyed the view for a few hours before it scurried back to the ground, when it began running in the backyards of Franklin Street residences before being tranquilized by members from the Human Rescue Alliance.

The sleeping bear is being evaluated by a veterinarian from the National Zoo and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is assisting with its handling.
