According to officials, an environmental assessment was completed over the weekend in advance of the removal of the monument, and now they are ready to move ahead as the country continues to remove Confederate symbolism from military facilities. Confederate Statue Depicting Slavery Removed From Arlington National Cemetery, Opinions Sought The longstanding Confederate Memorial in the Arlington National Cemetery is on its way out, and public input is being sought. The Confederate Memorial is scheduled to be removed from Section 16 of the Arlington National Cemetery after nearly 110 years, at the request of Congress and implemented by the Secretary of Defense.
