Marcus Bailey, 31, had allegedly taken merchandise from a store on S. Hayes Street around 1:40 p.m. Saturday, March 9, bringing police to the scene.

A responding officer found him near 15th Street S. and S. Fern Street and attempted to detain him. Bailey resisted arrest, pushed the officer away and tried to strike the officer, police said.

That's when an off-duty officer who was driving in the area saw the struggle and got out of his vehicle to assist in taking the suspect into custody.

Bailey sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention.

Bailey, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with Assault on Police, Petit Larceny and Obstruction of Justice.
