Driver Thought He Hit Deer In Virginia—But It Was A Man, Sheriff Says

A Virginia driver who called 911 thinking he had hit a deer ended up fatally striking a man, authorities said.

Gregory Breeden, 52, of Stafford, was walking along Cambridge Street near the 500 block just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, when he was hit by a driver heading northbound in the right lane, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Believing he had struck a deer, the driver immediately called 911, officials said. But when deputies arrived and searched the area, they found Breeden lying on the ground with severe injuries.

Breeden was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver remained at the scene, was uninjured, and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
