Portsmouth resident Ahmaud Brown had trouble paying for a hotel room at the Holiday Inn on Sanford Road, but got a free one at the Rappahannock Regional Jail after causing a disturbance on Wednesday morning.
At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Nov. 13, deputies from the sheriff's office were called to the hotel, where there was a reported disturbance involving a guest who was struggling to pay for a room, but openly inquired "where one could get cocaine," officials said.
When he was rebuffed, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office said that Brown became argumentative with deputies, then attempted to provide a false ID, which did not work because "the person he was pretending to be did not have the rather noticeable face tattoos that the suspect before them had."
Further investigation found that Brown had a capias out of Portsmouth for child neglect and was also wanted by the US Marshals.
While en route to the jail, investigators say that Brown attempted to discard a suspected controlled substance in the backseat of the cruiser, leading to further charges.
Brown was charged with possession of controlled substances, providing a false identity to law enforcement, and was also served on the outstanding warrants.
He's being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond until he can be taken into the custody of the US Marshals.
