The 56-year-old Stafford resident was arrested overnight and charged for his fourth DUI after nearly striking a deputy's vehicle when he cut him off, officials say.
Shortly after 11 p.m. on Oct. 22, a deputy on patrol in the area of Staffordboro Boulevard spotted a Lincoln failing to maintain its lane before making a sudden shift, forcing the deputy to slam on the brakes to avoid a crash.
According to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office, during the subsequent traffic stop, Mitchell "had signs of intoxication, including the heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person comparable to the strongest cologne."
Mitchell told the deputy that he had been "periodically" been drinking during the day; however, his last drink was 15 minutes ago.
Officials noted that Mitchell's license was revoked due to his previous DUI convictions, and during the investigation, "Mitchell advised he was 'caught again.'"
His last DUI offense in Stafford County was in June 2022.
Mitchell was charged with:
- Driving under the influence fourth offense within ten years;
- Driving while revoked;
- Second offense driving after forfeiture of his license;
- Failure to maintain the lane of travel;
- Having no inspection sticker.
He's being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
