A dump truck barreled down a busy road in Montgomery County after its brakes failed Monday, before the driver made a split-second move that may have prevented possible disaster, police said. The Montgomery County Department of Police said the runaway truck lost its brakes on a downhill stretch of Colesville Road near the Beltway and Sligo Creek Parkway on Sept. 15 — a crossing heavily used by joggers and cyclists. Route 50 was shut down for approximately an hour in Fairfax County on Monday morning when a dump truck driver crashed and took down some power lines. At around 6 a.m. on Oct. 7, officers were called to assist at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on the usually-busy roadway near Fair Ridge Drive in Fair Lakes. The crash resulted in Route 50 being closed in both directions on Monday morning while crews made repairs, resulting in major delays and temporary traffic backups until the scene could be cleared. Traffic was temporarily slowed on I-95 in Virginia on Monday ahead of the afternoon commute when a dump truck overturned and dropped debris into the roadway. Shortly after 4 p.m. on June 17, crews were called to a stretch of the northbound lanes of the interstate in Prince William County, where there was a reported crash with a truck on its side.
