Approximately 140 million returns are expected to be filed by the Tuesday, April 15 deadline. Last year, around two-thirds of taxpayers received refunds, averaging about $3,100, according to IRS data.
The IRS opened the 2025 tax filing season on Monday, Jan. 27.
For many households, a tax refund can be the largest annual payment they receive all year, and it's often used to pay off debt.
To track your refund, you can utilize the IRS’s “Where’s my refund?” link on its website, which has seen improvements in recent years. Info can also be accessed on the IRS2Go mobile app.
Here’s how it works:
Both platforms provide information about your 2024 tax return approximately 24 hours after you e-file. If you file a paper return, you’ll need to wait about four weeks for your details to appear.
To track your refund, you’ll need to enter:
- Your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification number
- Your filing status (e.g., single or married filing jointly)
- The exact dollar amount of your expected refund from your 2024 tax return
Once you provide this information, the tracking service will inform you whether the IRS has received your return, if your refund is approved, and when the funds will be deposited into your account.
