The Manassas City County approved a measure on Monday, July 11, that will raised the speed limit on Wellington Road near Metz Middle School and along Hastings Drive near Round Elementary from 15 to 25 MPH during school hours, WTOP reported. These were the lowest speed limits around schools in the city.
The board also approved a resolution to install speed cameras in those areas to target drivers who drive faster than they think, the report said. City leaders hope the cameras – and potential speeding tickets — will deter cars from zooming through those areas.
“Even if we made it 10 miles per hour, if we’re not there to regulate it, there’s nothing to stop anyone from speeding,” Manassas Police Chief Doug Keen told the city council, per WTOP. “Our desire for this photo enforcement is consistent speed, with consistent enforcement, to get compliance from the people going through there.”
Keen said after the cameras are up, drivers will receive warnings rather than tickets for the first 30 days, the report said.
