The incident unfolded shortly after 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, when deputies responded to a hit-and-run at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Burns Corner.
The victim told deputies that his vehicle had been struck by a white Ford Ranger.
The driver of the Ranger, later identified as Onancock resident Travis Northam, 22, briefly stopped to plead with the victim not to involve law enforcement.
When the victim refused, the suspect fled the scene, authorities said.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies quickly located the Ford as it passed directly by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office on Courthouse Road.
After pulling the vehicle over, a deputy noted signs of intoxication and discovered open containers inside the truck, officials said.
Northam admitted to drinking two margaritas prior to the crash and explained that he had been distracted because he was attempting to lean over and kiss his passenger at the time of the crash.
This romantic misstep came at a hefty price.
Northam was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2, drinking while driving, as well as hit-and-run.
He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until sobering up.
